Foundations of Economic Analysis. by Paul Anthony Samuelson

چکیده

HIS is a very important contribution in the field of pure economics which I ought to be of interest to econometricians and those statisticians who concern themselves with economic matters. The author endeavors throughout to derive 'operationally meaningful" propositions in economics from the assumption of maximizing behavior. Operationally meaningful statements are hypotheses about empirical data which could conceivably be refuted, if only under ideal conditions. These ideas are related to those of some modern positivist philosophers, especially Bridgeman. It is perhaps unfortunate that the author has not included a methodological chapter in his book. An explicit statement of his philosophical ideas may have contributed to the understanding of his book. It may have helped some economists who are sceptical about the applicability of radical positivism and behaviorism in the social sciences.

Optimal Monetary Policy: a New Keynesian View

As Paul Samuelson once put it: Adam Smith is dead and Keynes is dead; well— and Mises is dead, too. But Keynesianism is alive and well and back with a vengeance. Built on solid neoclassical foundations, this “new” Keynesianism, which features the effects of nominal rigidities in the presence of economic shocks and the existence of involuntary unemployment, represents the theoretical core of mod...

The Evolutionary Foundations of Preferences∗

This paper, prepared for the forthcoming The Social Economics Handbook (Jess Benhabib, Alberto Bisin and Matthew Jackson, editors, Elsevier Press), surveys recent work on the evolutionary origins of preferences. We are especially interested in the circumstances under which evolution would push preferences away from the self-interested perfectly-rational expected utility maximization of classica...

Complementarities have been a recurrent and somewhat contentious t...

Economic Theory in the Mathematical Mode

I. If a symbolic date were to be chosen for the birth of mathematical economics, our profession, in rare unanimous agreement, would select 1838, the year in which Augustin Cournot published his Recherches sur les Principes Mathématiques de la Théorie des Richesses. Students of the history of economic analysis could point out contributions made to mathematical economics as early as the beginning...
